The sold-out event starts with a buffet breakfast from the chefs at Rueben's, followed by a panel discussion titled:It's day one of the Franschhoek Literary Festival , and we are kicking things off this morning with the News24 breakfast at Reuben's Restaurant & Bar. News24 editor-in-chief Adriaan Basson will be in discussion with Ferial Haffajee, Prince Mashele and Richard Calland to discuss the state of South Africa's coalition politics and infrastructure collapse.

Kicking off the festival’s first session, which is a News24 Breakfast probing the state of the “Next New South Africa”, News24 editor-in-chief Adriaan Basson will lead the discussion with leading commentators Ferial Haffajee , Prince Mashele and Qanitaah Hunter . • On 19 May the session Bloedhonde takes place between 16:00 and 17:00 at the Old School Hall. A lively discussion in Afrikaans with seasoned crime writers Rudie van Rensburg and Irma Venter .

• The list of Afrikaans authors taking part in this year’s festival also includes Chase Rhys who will discuss Misfit: Stories vannie anne kant. Lester Kiewit facilitates the session Seen & Heard on 20 May from 13:00 to 14:00 at the Congregational Church that also includes Welcome Mandla Lishivha who wrote Boy on the Run.

• Booker-longlisted Rachel Joyce is part of an impressive contingent of international writers. Festivalgoers can get to know Joyce in a trio of sessions at the FLF 2023 – Time Travel 101, Read it and Weep and Why Fiction?
