LIVE | Eskom to brief SA on the state of the power system
3m agoOberholzer: I would like to make an announcement. It is with regret I have to inform you that Rhulani Mathebula has tendered his resignation and will leave Eskom at the end of this month, November. As this briefing goes on - Eskom CEO Andre du Ruyter is addressing a COP27 event at Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt.
Eskom said the higher stage of load shedding was owing to a"high level of breakdowns" as well as the depletion of emergency resources. Stage 2 load shedding will start at 09:00 on Tuesday, and will be implemented until further notice, Eskom has announced. On Sunday morning, a generation unit at Kriel Power Station was returned to service while the return to service of a unit at Majuba Power Station has been delayed.
The delay in the return to service of a generating unit each at Majuba and Tutuka power stations also contributed to the generation capacity shortages. A generating unit at Hendrina power station was returned to service. "While it is uncertain at this point, it is anticipated the unit may remain offline for a few months and this duration shall become clearer over the next few weeks."Eskom is consulting with specialists including the equipment manufacturer to establish how best the plant can be restored quickly.
"The increase in load shedding is mainly due to the need to preserve emergency generation reserves, the delay in returning four generating units to service, while many running units are operating at reduced capacity due to technical faults," Eskom said. Currently, the power utility has 4 886MW on planned maintenance, while another 13 792MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.Load shedding will be suspended at midnight on Friday, Eskom said. This is thanks to lower weekend demand.
"Stage 3 load shedding is currently underway until 16:00 on Thursday, thereafter, it will increase to Stage 4 until 05:00 on Friday morning," the power utility said. Since Tuesday night Eskom returned a generating unit each at Duvha, Kendal and Medupi power stations to service. "Eskom teams have returned a generating unit each at Grootvlei, Hendrina, Majuba, Matla and Tutuka power stations to service."Stage 3 load shedding will be implemented until further notice due to delays in returning generation units to service, as well as further breakdowns, Eskom said on Thursday evening. Previously, stage 3 was set to be suspended on Friday morning.
Stage 3 load shedding will continue to be implemented until 05:00 on Friday morning. Load shedding will then be suspended for the day. In addition, Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented at 16:00 on Friday and continue until 05:00 on Saturday. Eskom said it would publish a further update on Friday afternoon.Stage 4 load shedding will be implemented until midnight on Tuesday. Thereafter, stage 2 will be implemented until 05:00 on Wednesday, Eskom said on Tuesday afternoon.
Eskom says 5 244MW of electricity is out due to planned maintenance, while another 15 612MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns. Due to lower weekend demand, load shedding will be suspended at midnight on Friday, Eskom said in a statement. "Since Tuesday a generation unit each at Camden, Kriel, Kusile, Matla and Medupi power stations were returned to service. Two generating units at Majuba and one at Tutuka power stations were taken offline for repairs.
The embattled power utility has implemented a record spell of unbroken rolling power cuts as it suffered a series of breakdowns at many of its key power stations in recent weeks. That said, a generating unit each at Hendrina, Kendal and Majuba power stations were taken offline for repairs. "This necessitates the immediate escalation of load shedding to Stage 4 at 18:00. This stage of load shedding will be maintained until further notice. Eskom will publish a full statement tomorrow afternoon," the utility said.South Africa's record stretch of load shedding will continue this week, with Eskom confirming Stage 3 load shedding will remain in place until 05:00 on Thursday morning.
The delay in returning two generating units at Kendal power station and one generating unit at Tutuka power station to the grid has added to the capacity constraint. Eskom currently has 6 893MW on planned maintenance, while another 16 168MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.is the new chair - he previously served as an acting Eskom CEO and was described by Gordhan as a casualty of the state capture era.
