Houston's Halls Bayou gets nearly 600 new trees in city reforestation effort

is targeting Halls Bayou with this latest project, planting hundreds of trees, as well as 200 wetland plants.

Not only does this tree-planting effort help reforest Halls Bayou, but it also will eventually add more shade to the area and, as tree roots develop, will help prevent erosion along the bayou's natural banks. Those tree roots also serve as natural flood mitigation, absorbing more water during heavy rain events.

"We work hand in hand with flood control throughout the city, and it's working out pretty well," she said of the bayou trails and greenspaces, which help protect nearby homes from flooding."The idea of embracing nature-based solutions as they look at detention is getting serious attention and traction.

Until a couple of years ago, Halls Bayou — which runs from north central Harris County to East Houston outside of the 610 Loop between I-69 on the west and U.S. Highway 90 on the east — was considered a tributary of Greens Bayou. Now, it's a small, stand-alone body of water still in its natural state, never having been widened, dug deeper or covered in concrete.
