There's been a big crackdown on littering and waste
Penalties of almost £10,000 have been dished out by a court for rubbish dumping and other waste offences.
The fines, court costs and other orders were imposed after prosecutions by Blackburn with Darwen Council. The 20 residents all appeared before Blackburn magistrates on October 18 for a variety of offences including dumping black bin bags in alleyways, letting waste build up in backyards and alleyways and allowing their household rubbish to breed pests.
Dozens of other people have been given fixed penalty notices for similar offences. Blackburn with Darwen Council environment boss Cllr Jim Smith said: “I am delighted that these fines have been issued to those who have broken the law by dumping their waste on the streets without any consideration. “These residents have been allowing their rubbish to build up meaning it has been attracting vermin or causing infestations and it is completely unacceptable.“We aim to tackle environmental crimes in a serious manner due to the impact it has on our communities as well as having an impact on the environment when people dispose of their waste when and wherever they want.
