Case of Corner Brook boy found guilty this week of assaulting girlfriend is not unusual
STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOS
As SaltWire Network reported Thursday, a teenage boy was found guilty this week after a trial in provincial court in Corner Brook of assaulting his girlfriend at a pizza restaurant in 2021, when they were both between 14 and 15 years old. Age is a major risk factor, with younger people more likely to be victimized. Statistics Canada numbers for 2018 indicate 29 per cent of females between 15 and 24 years old reported having experienced intimate-partner violence in the preceding 12 months, at least double the proportion reported in other age groups.
Enström says Iris Kirby House regularly receives reports of intimate-partner and dating violence occurring at young ages. In many cases, the abuse begins online through social media platforms before turning physical, Enström says. Creating a space where kids feel safe to talk to a trusted adult about what is going on in their life is vital, she said.
