In his first comments, Health Minister Adrian Dix said the patient\u0027s death was \u0022awful\u0022 but listed the care she received in the waiting room.
which has seen several rural emergency rooms close on busy weekends. Dix said the shortage of medical staff has been exacerbated by an increasing number of people off sick due to COVID.
Distraught Lions Gate employees have said the woman was admitted with cardiac concerns, and that nurses and doctors did their best to check on her but couldn’t provide the type of monitoring she would receive on a ward. Vancouver Coastal Health representatives met with the woman’s family on Friday, and are investigating her death — a report that Dix hopes is completed by mid-August. The family can also request a patient care quality review, which Dix said is independent of the health authority.
Vancouver Coastal Health has ordered some changes at Lions Gate since this patient died, such as trying to reduce the number of people in the waiting room, B.C. Nurses’ Union vice-president Adriane Gear said.
