A lion is stranded near the Kruger National Park after the park's fence was damaged by elephants. The Malalane community is warned to be vigilant and avoid approaching the lion.
SANParks has urged the Malalane community in Mpumalanga to remain vigilant as a lion is reportedly stuck between the Kruger National Park 's veterinary fence and the Crocodile River. On Friday night, some employees from a local company spotted the lion along the river. The company’s Phillip Roets said the river is currently too high for the animal to traverse, but he believes it will eventually cross back to the KNP once the water level is lower.
“We have had a couple of animal incidents over the past two months, because of the damaged fence,” he said. The KNP’s fence is down in multiple locations, due to elephant damage. This means the lion has free access to the residential areas and farms. Dogs and other domestic animals may attract it. Therefore cyclists, joggers and community members are urged to remain cautious. The KNP’s spokesperson, Isaac Phaahla, said if one encounters the lion, they should remain calm and not approach it. Residents are advised against running away as that may trigger a chase response. “We are aware of the situation and are keeping a close eye on it. The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency is also keeping an eye out. We have not confirmed where the lion came from as there are multiple reserves around the area,” Phaahla said. Residents are also advised to report any sightings of the animal to the MTPA’s hotline on 013 065 0859 or 013 065 0888 or the SAPS on 08600 10111
