Lin-Manuel Miranda on his directorial debut and Jonathan Larson's influence

With the premiere of his new movie “Tick, Tick…Boom!” Miranda makes his feature film directorial debut in a full circle moment — telling the story of playwright Jonathan Larson, whose work inspired Miranda early in his own career., Miranda told Sunday TODAY's Willie Geist that it's thrilling to see his name listed as the director of the movie that meant so much to him.

"It's such a dream come true for me. There were challenges to this film. We made this film in the midst of a pandemic," Miranda, 41, said."There were so many times when I thought this movie would never get made, and so to be on this side of it is just an enormous relief. What I'm most proud of is the fact that the people in Jonathan's life are so proud of him. That means I've done my job.""Tick, Tick...

When reflecting on his achievements and the success of his musicals, Miranda told Geist that Larson's work and untimely death inspired one of the core messages of"“Well, I think the things that it's quote, unquote are ‘about’ are not really what it's about,” he said. “It's really about what are we doing with our time.”

“It's the same feeling I got when I saw ‘Tick, Tick... Boom!’ at age 21 and thought, ‘What am I really doing with my life?’" Miranda continued."I think ‘Hamilton’ hits that weird chord in the same way.”
