Both Limpopo premier Phophi Ramathuba and Polokwane mayor Makoro John Mpe face severe allegations ahead of the ANC Limpopo elective conference.
The upcoming 11th ANC Limpopo elective conference is facing a series of controversies as two prominent contenders, Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba and Polokwane Mayor Makoro John Mpe, find themselves embroiled in allegations of nepotism, fraud, and corruption.
Ramathuba is accused, alongside MEC for cooperative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs Basikopo Makamu, of siphoning funds from the controversial Mogalakwena municipality through the questionable awarding of municipal contracts. She is further alleged to have colluded with Mogalakwena municipal manager Montenga Morris Maluleka to award contracts to individuals who are close friends and political allies. Ramathuba vehemently denies these accusations, attributing them to a coordinated smear campaign originating from a Facebook account that was subsequently deactivated. She claims that the narrative shifted to a parody Twitter account (@generalmkhwanaz) after the municipality took action against the initial misinformation. Meanwhile, Mpe, who also serves as the Polokwane mayor, is facing accusations of favoring foreign nationals over local contractors and appointing foreigners to strategic positions within the Polokwane municipality. He has not publicly addressed these allegations. Despite the on-going controversies, the ANC in the Peter Mokaba region has publicly stated its unwavering support for Mpe. The ANC Women’s League has signaled its intention to back Ramathuba for the provincial chair position. With the conference approaching, the question remains whether these allegations will ultimately emerge as significant enough to hinder the candidacies of either Ramathuba or Mpe and impact the outcome of the election
