Miyazaki came through qualifying and becomes the first Brit into the second round
With compatriot Jodie Burrage, the British No 2 in action on Tuesday, watching on from the benches on the sidelines, Miyazaki then broke again as errors from Betova’s racket gifted the Briton the advantage.
Miyazaki’s groundstrokes dug her out of trouble in the eighth game, and she followed that up with an impressive break to love to take the opener 6-3. Three break opportunities came and went for Miyazaki in the second game of the second set, but still the 27-year-old continued to look the more threatening, with patience often the key given Betova looked prone to making errors.
Miyazaki then saved three break points herself before breaking to love in the sixth game, an advantage she was able to maintain as she reached the second round. And, whisper it, coming through qualifying was exactly how Emma Raducanu started her unlikely US Open triumph two years ago. Miyazaki, in her own endeavours, faces No 15 seed Belinda Bencic next. Raducanu beat Bencic in the quarter-final en route to glory in 2021.
