From brianlilley: Here's how the Ford government can put beer in corner stores
When the McGuinty government announced in 2006 that the province would start charging a deposit on wine and liquor containers, they set up the recycling program through The Beer Store rather than the provincially owned LCBO. The Beer Store already had the facilities for collecting empty beer cans and bottles and agreed to facilitate this new program.
Not that this is a done deal, the major grocers such as Loblaws, Sobeys and Metro also want to control the distribution of alcohol to their own stores but also to corner stores. For them, it’s a play to become the wholesaler to smaller chains or independents on other products like chips or paper towels.
This may seem like a radical change for some, but in much of the province this is how people buy alcohol. In smaller rural settings both the LCBO and Beer Store use what are called Agency Stores as their local retail outlets.
