Ontario has long\u002Dterm and short\u002Dterm problems when it comes to healthcare and specifically healthcare staffing.
is complex and does offer some wiggle room for people to come back earlier under certain conditions, but it is still too restrictive for where we are with COVID-19 at this point. The vast majority of the population has two shots, vulnerable populations have four shots and even some of them are still catching a mild case of COVID.
Rau isn’t alone in believing the current policy is part of the problem. Dr. Matt Strauss, the acting public health officer for Haldimand-Norfolk, believes the policy needs to be reconsidered as well. Strauss has plenty to say about the disrespect shown to nurses in our healthcare system, including during the pandemic, and says that in his experience morale has taken a beating.
Longer term, we need to consider not only pay for nurses – they are well paid – but also work conditions. Many of those leaving hospital work are doing so to take jobs where they don’t have to deal with night shifts, scheduling hassles or bad management.
