We chat with ILoveMyDad star Lil Rel Howery (LilRel4) about the wild true story behind the film, befriending Patton Oswalt, planning a Jordan Peele reunion, and more:
Some parents will go to dangerous extremes to stay in their kids' lives, as seen in I Love My Dad. The film centers on an overbearing father who, in an attempt to reconnect with a son that's cut him out of his life, begins catfishing him on social media. Soon enough, his plan begins to backfire when his son wants to go on a road trip to meet the woman he thinks he's falling in love with.
It's certainly a route to take! What were some of the biggest goals that you discussed with James in those meetings for helping to tell the story? What is it like for you to walk that balance for this character of wanting to revel in the oddity of it, but also trying to pull Patton back from going to this extent?
What was one of your favorite moments getting to work with Patton on set, whether it be a scene, or even just something off-camera? Did you get to improvise during that scene as well, or was it all pretty much stick stay into the pages of the script? Daniel did just get to reunite with him for Nope. Do you ever bug Jordan for "Hey, can I come on the next movie?," or, "Hey, you got anything for me coming down the pipeline?"
The film's been out for a little bit now, and it's doing well critically, how has it been for you seeing the response from both critics and audiences to the film? We've talked a lot about your comedy, but you've also shown a lot of great range in the dramatic field as well, whether it be Deep Water, or Judas and the Black Messiah. What is that like for you getting to play such a range of genres and tones throughout your career so far?
Lil Rel Howery: It's really the story first, for me, and if it's something fun that we can take a real good ride with. A great example is we just finished Vacation Friends 2, Honeymoon Friends and with sequels, you know, it's "Oh, here we go with another sequel. They're gonna try to do the same exact thing they did the first time." But what I love about this particular script is it's so different from the first one.
Love to hear it. The first one did well, both critically and viewership wise for Hulu, what was it like seeing that really great reaction from audiences for that one? Lil Rel Howery: It's great. This show has an old school feel to it. Like some of the shows I used to like in the '80s, like these mystery type of shows with guest stars. I would watch a show like Murder She Wrote, and The Heat of the Night, all these different shows, Perry Mason, Matlock. Those guest stars were just as important as anybody who was a regular cast member, so you look forward to that. That's what this represents, every episode is its own movie.
