A cluster of nine smaller fires is also burning about 30 kilometres southeast of the Pine Pass – the largest, at two hectares.
A spate of lightning strikes in the past two weeks has resulted in no less than two dozen new wildfires of all sizes cropping up in the Prince George Fire Centre. The two largest in the Peace Region – the Folded Hill Creek fire west of Hudson’s Hope, and the Hasler Flats blaze, southwest of Chetwynd, continue to burn out of control.
At last report, flames from the Folded Hill Creek wildfire had charred close to 450 hectares, or 4.5 square kilometres; more than 150 hectares has burned near Hasler Flats. Two others in the northeast corner of the region, the Dall Lake fire and an unnamed blaze north of Coal River are being held. All four of the larger fires are being linked to lightning strikes and are not threatening any homes or property. That includes removing grass and debris from exhaust pipes and engines on all-terrain vehicles when in the forest.
And, although temperatures are expected to drop slightly this weekend, the forecast is for only a chance of showers, meaning continued dry conditions. Email your letters to [email protected]
