The Ampersand: Life’s a bunch of polony.

Bread price fixing. Maize price fixing. Listeriosis. And now a recall of canned vegetables.

In a spectacular show of “failing upwards”, Doyle — who once left the company under a cloud over his close links to a bread price fixing scandal — began his tenure on 1 February.its board was “pleased to have appointed someone of Noel’s calibre” after what he described as “a rigorous and extensive search process”.

The company’s slow acknowledgement of its role in the outbreak — linked by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases — led to a class-action suit by affected families. Despite this, Tiger Brands maintains that its liability has not yet been established. Regardless, it was a major blow for the company, whose products feature in households across South Africa and the rest of the continent.

Now Tiger Brands is recalling 20-million cans of its Koo and Hugo’s vegetable products after a leak in a batch of goods detected in May this year was found to have been wider than initially thought, it said on Monday. The move could cost the firm more than half-a-billion rand. Here’s hoping that’s all that’s lost this time.
