Places that have established similar approaches, such as the U.K., Scotland and New Zealand, have seen the system move “more quickly and more flexibly with respect to the applications that come forward,” Lametti said. “There’s a whole swath of other people, many of whom statistically must be Indigenous or Black, who may have been asked or convinced to plead guilty even though they weren’t, and this is meant to be accessible to them and in some cases even to help them with the framing.”
