So used to lauding his workload and pitching excellence, Hendriks’ condition quickly brought about a very human level of concern from his teammates and coaches.“When I spoke with him in January, and he disclosed the news,” said assistant pitching coach Curt Hasler, “You’re shocked. You’re saddened, but you go: Gosh, No. 1, I just want him to be good. I want him to be OK. I want him to be healthy.”
“We aren’t there yet,” said general manager Rick Hahn last week. “He still has some medical hurdles to clear and then we get to some baseball hurdles to clear. But the fact that we are even entertaining this conversation is remarkable.”Pitching in a major-league bullpen is hard.
“Most people, even myself, would try to get him to focus on real-life stuff,” Katz said. “But I also understand from a standpoint of anybody, you want to try to have things stable. Baseball is, that’s his living. That’s his passion. So to not do anything, I could see anybody being lost without it. But from our standpoint, we just want him to be healthy and be good. And he wanted to keep going. Looking back, it’s everything.
