Laura Piccinin is a witty standup comic with a long history of coming out to people.
Falling somewhere between standup comedy and a narrative solo show, Laura Piccinin’s witty and contemplative “Lesbihonest” is a raucous hour of coming-out and staying proud as a queer person surrounded by labels.
Piccinin recounts her own coming-out story — she recommends not telling your parents you’re gay on the same day they’d planned to tell you they’re getting a divorce — and traces her own relationships, with other people and with queerness itself, finding resonances in unlikely places. Some of Piccinin’s more compelling content is in her discussion on labels — pansexual versus bisexual, lesbian versus queer, demisexual versus allosexual — but in the end, none of those labels really matter, she says. They’ve been helpful for Piccinin on her own private journey to discover herself. But in the grand scheme of things, those labels are just a tool for self-identifying, and they don’t have to be used if they don’t make you happy.
As well, Piccinin draws attention towards the Ontario Arts Council’s recent decision to stop treating LGBTQ individuals as a priority group for receiving funding. Piccinin provides funny, but extremely powerful commentary on the situation. Piccinin is a masterful comic with a keen sense of timing and joke structure. Within moments, she commands the audience, and we’re happy to follow wherever she’d like to go, be it through the trenches of a closeted childhood or the joy of life as an out and proud adult.
