Lewis Hamilton is changing his name to include his mother's last name, Larbalestier, to continue her family line. He expressed his disapproval of the tradition of women losing their names upon marriage.
Hamilton who celebrated his 40th birthday earlier this week, last won the F1 championship in 2020 and is in the twilight of his career.'Why does the woman lose her name?'
"I’m really proud of my family’s name: Hamilton," said of the ensuing name change for the first time in 2022. "Actually, none of you might know that my mum’s name is Larbalestier, and I’m just about to put that in my name. "Because I don’t really fully understand the whole idea of why, when people get married, the woman loses her name. I really want her name to continue on with the Hamilton name.”
Hamilton has also been vocal in his support for Africa, and in particular South Africa to host an F1 event for the first time since 1993.“I’ve been doing a lot of work in the background on it. I’ve spoken to people in Rwanda, I’ve spoken to people in South Africa. Rwanda is a longer project, but it’s amazing that they’re so keen to get a part of it.”
