Obituary: Lewis Cullman made a fortune investing in obscure companies and then gave away more than $500 million, stamping his name on museums and libraries
Lewis Cullman’s first two careers—weather forecasting and securities sales—didn’t pan out. In his 40s, he finally found his niche as a shrewd buyer of underappreciated companies. His later years were devoted largely to giving away more than $500 million, much of it to museums and programs promoting chess, education and the arts.
Mr. Cullman, who died June 7 at the age of 100, was born into a family that made a fortune in tobacco farming and trading. After graduating from Yale, he was determined to make his own mark.
