Mourning the queen
Forced treatment is the answer, just not the panacea. Sadly, there never will be a perfect solution. There is the belief that an individual must be allowed to make their own decision to seek treatment, and that the government shouldn’t interfere with this most basic of human rights. This flawed viewpoint is based on the assumption the person is able to make a rational choice.
Forced treatment alone will not work. It must take place in a purpose-built facility staffed by well-trained professionals delivering support programs that provide the best chance at recovery: drug and mental health counselling, education upgrades, work training, nutrition, hygiene and physical fitness. Only when this curriculum is successfully completed will the person be assigned supportive housing where they can be safely monitored.
Forced treatment implemented properly can provide the one element that harm reduction strategies cannot: Hope. Hope is the strongest drug, inspiring people to want to get better and stay better.Pierre Poilievre’s leadership victory gives the lie to the concern that proportional representation will doom us to becoming hostage to fringe parties. Here, we have a right-wing populist who has risen from inside the big-tent Conservative party to become the voice of Canada’s conservatives.
This underlines the danger of first-past-the-post. It allows fringe parties to exist within a more moderate party, exerting influence behind the scenes, only to be seen when the time is ripe. In contrast, proportional representation gives fringe parties the prospect of winning some seats if they have enough of the popular vote, around five per cent in some countries.
