Vancouver is a beautiful city plagued with challenges. The unimaginable suffering of the chronically homeless. The struggles of those living with and dying of addictions. The lack of services and facilities for the mentally ill. The increasing and impossible demands on food banks to feed the poor, including the working poor and now the university students. The plight of those looking for affordable housing, even for those with good incomes. Traffic congestion.

My wife and I had recently purchased a townhouse and I was a hobbyist woodworker. For some reason I said I’d take the wood. It sat in our shed for a few more years. Finally one spring I got the boxes out and spent a week hand-pulling all the nails. Then we tore up the carpet in our master bedroom. I took the old wood and hand nailed it into a new bedroom floor. It looked awful and smelled worse. We hired a professional to sand it.
