However, when our son came of age in the late 1960s he joined a nearby troop and I volunteered as an adult leader. After over 30 years as a leader in numerous positions and many camping trips, including two national jamborees and several visits to Philmont, I finally quit. I recommend that all fathers of young boys encourage their sons to join and that they join with them. It is the massive number of volunteer leaders that makes the program and experiences work. Selfishly, one may say “it’s a great trip.”— With Memorial Day just a couple of weeks ago, I’d like to mention the forgotten drivers of the Red Ball Express, a truck convoy that kept our World War II soldiers supplied with food, ammunition and anything else that was needed as they advanced on the enemy.
