Readers praise four nonprofits; are grateful to learn about thoughtful giving; and appreciate the coverage of the Tour de France.— Re: “Building sale gives new hope — Two poverty, homelessness nonprofits close deal, with one keeping other’s legacy,” July 23 news story.
When I learned about the dissolving of CitySquare, I grieved, having watched Larry James and Ed Eason since they envisioned this outreach and championed justice by helping the poor and homeless of Dallas. When I read about the relocation of First Presbyterian Dallas’ The Stewpot to the CitySquare Opportunity Center, I rejoiced.Generativity refers to making a positive impact and contributing to the world. James and Eason exemplify generativity.
To my surprise, he immediately inquired about the price of the item I intended to order. Instead of accepting my offer, he opted for a less expensive and healthier salad. He then suggested I use the saved money to help another person in need. His selflessness and consideration for others deeply touched me.
This encounter taught me the importance of thoughtful and intentional giving. It made me realize that random acts of charity, while well-meaning, might not always be the most effective way to help those in need. The homeless man’s suggestion to plan our efforts and ensure they are meaningful and impactful resonated with me.I hope this story inspires others to approach their acts of kindness with a similar mindset.
