Memorials for Irina and Kevin McCarthy, two of seven people killed in Monday's Fourth of July parade mass shooting, stands within a veterans memorial July 6, 2022, in Highland Park, Ill.How well versed I am in Second Amendments rights. Why are we not equally well versed in the second paragraph of the first article in the Declaration of Independence: the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Just as these particular crimes have become banal, so, too, have our responses to them. Republicans, in particular, have assembled a grab bag of solutions to the problem: more attention to mental health, more active shooter drills for law enforcement, more locked doors and security guards for schools, more guns in the hands of citizens and more metal detectors.

Before my wife died we had saved money to go to your fair city. I really wanted to visit Times Square, Broadway and the 9-11 memorial. But now it’s way too dangerous. Suppose we want to do something to contain the epidemic of mass shootings in the United States. In that case, does it not make sense to have members of Congress create laws that deny access to weapons of war to civilians and enforce them rigorously?I write from a place of deep anger and despair. On Monday we had yet another mass shooting of innocent Americans with a military-style rifle, this time at a July Fourth parade.

I think we now have to ask ourselves what rights and freedom are most important? Is the right to bear arms more important than our right to assemble in public places, schools, churches, theaters, stores and at concerts and Independence Day celebrations free of fear? Or do we just need to suppress our fears of being in public to protect the right to bear arms?
