Letters to the Editor

Dear ERCOT, your pleas to us average citizens to conserve electricity during excessive heat is commendable but frankly is not targeting the actual electricity guzzlers and wasters. Asking us to raise our thermostat and not use appliances between 3 and 8 p.m. may help a little, and as a concerned citizen, my household does its part.

We have been lucky this summer because power generation from renewables can often be a crapshoot and not available when needed. Demand will continue to rise because of population growth and increased use of electrical devices. It is crucial to make sensible decisions that will ensure public safety and dependable electricity for the future. This summer has been exceptional for Texas sunshine, and ERCOT has benefited. The lull between sunshine and wind power occurs just as folks are returning from work and cranking up their air conditioning. Battery storage tends to power the grid for only a few hours, we’re told.

This 30% keeping power, while 70% suffer through rolling blackouts as happened in February 2021 should not be tolerated. We all are paying for electricity; we all should be participating in rolling blackouts.
