Given the fact that when Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited Canada to ask Justin Trudeau for natural gas he instead received a lecture on green energy, I can only imagine the “warm welcome” Trudeau must have experienced at the G7 gabfest in Hiroshima. I’m sure Kishida’s smile did not match his thoughts. When we are fully able to help an ally and choose not to, all of Canada “loses face.
In one sense, I can’t blame any business from trying to get what they can from governments, even if I disagree with corporate welfare. That said, if EV battery production really was a profitable venture, Stellantis would go ahead with building this factory, so they can start making money, and worry about squeezing subsidies or tax breaks out of the government on the back end. I know that Unifor members may not like to hear this, but these subsidies aren’t creating jobs.
