‘It is depressing to realize that Justin Trudeau’s strategies are a significant cause of the polarization we see across Canada.’ The Liberals in decline? Plus other letters to the editor for Nov. 5
: The decline of the federal and Quebec Liberal parties is not unrelated to the decline of Quebec separatism.
But I see a continuing challenge to national unity since Justin Trudeau’s Liberals have been in power, coming from the governing party itself. There are enough of Keith Davey’s “garden-variety Canadians” who long to belong and don’t recognize the Canada of today, an agglomeration of nations with no overarching sense of nationhood.Howard GreenfieldThe Liberal government under Justin Trudeau has changed significantly.
I look at today’s federal leaders, the whole bunch, and give them all a vote of no confidence. I will certainly not be volunteering for the Liberals in the next round.Contributor Jefferey Simpson hits the nail on the head: The Liberal party has lost its balance, allowing social spending to cancel fiscal responsibility. The Prime Minister’s Office seems to be dictating left-leaning values with no strong voices to debate within.
The good news for the Liberals is that despite their unbalance, they have managed some areas well while the Conservatives under Pierre Poilievre have embraced those who break the law and ignore science. If the Liberals find balance, many Canadians may still see the party as the best option to keep the country strong.Contributor Jeffrey Simpson has previously forecast Liberal decline.
