Re: “To help the homeless, address their real needs — Federal policy won’t work without focus on mental health and addiction,” by Ron Simmons, Dec. 14 Opinion.

The op-ed links increases in unsheltered homelessness with the “Housing First” approach. This is not a cause-and-effect relationship. Realistically, there are myriad reasons people fall into homelessness. Most significantly, one being a lack of truly affordable housing. What many think of as “Housing First” permanent housing programs are 16% of all shelter and housing provided in Texas. The op-ed and the linked video advocate more services are needed and a variety of programming, and I couldn’t agree more. But arguing that “Housing First” is not helping people meet their “real” needs is a step backward. More solutions are needed to prevent and end homelessness, including “Housing First,” not fewer.

There should be a workable program and appropriate services to deal with immigrants. We need them as workers, taxpayers and for the potential contributions that they and their children will make. Treating all of them as criminals denies their humanity. You’d think that Abbott, at least, would appreciate the value of immigrants, given the heritage of his family. There are many at the border who have skills we seriously need.Carol Stephenson, MesquiteI doubt Gov. Greg Abbott was aware of the irony as he called upon Texas’ attorney general to criminally investigate the nonprofits that provide aid to recently arrived immigrants and refugees.
