Re: “Fentanyl’s deadly path,” Sunday news stories. Your excellent stories report that the chemical precursors of fentanyl often come from China. It is ironic...

Readers say the demand for drugs needs to be addressed; believe that dark money needs to be removed from campaigns; don’t support school vouchers; and support gifted-and-talented programs in our schools.

The U.S. piggybacked on the Europeans’ success in 1844, when we negotiated the Treaty of Wanghia, the original U.S.-China trade deal, giving us the same rights to ship opium into China.’ recent chronicles of the fentanyl trade in North Texas and elsewhere misses an important point. That is summed up in the following quote.

The Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision ruled that money is speech and is protected by the First Amendment, and this led to the lack of transparency in elections and government. The proposed For Our Freedom Amendment would allow restrictions on political spending and would require disclosure of the sources of campaign funding, letting us know who’s trying to call the shots over our politicians and government.

What if the current administration in Austin had as a goal simply to “have the very best public school system in the nation,” guaranteeing every child in the state the opportunity of a first-rate K-12 foundation? What a novel idea! Public schools have issues, but they also have a difficult task of providing education to all in our diverse, multilingual society while accommodating special-needs kids. Enough already. Let’s focus on providing public school excellence for all of our children, not just those who can afford a private education. So many letters are so negative of our state politicians and our state government. I say move to New York or California — you would love it there.
