Re: Year-round trophy hunting raises concerns for animal conservation; Alberta’s big-game program extended from three months to attract U.S. money, March 15
Come on, Alberta Wildlife biologists. The Minister’s Special Licence program has been in place for decades. The opportunity is not only afforded to wealthy hunters , but there is a second licence for each species offered to Albertans through a fundraising raffle. The permits for moose, pronghorn and turkey are relatively new, while the mule deer, elk and sheep permits have existed with an extended season for years.
For the record, I agree with some of those quoted that a year-round season is unnecessary but it is in line with what other jurisdictions offer. This change mainly affects the two bighorn sheep licences of this program. Whether you agree with this or not, the sale of these licences has benefited all Albertans, especially hunters, as the stewards of these programs over the years have done their best to focus the funds back into worthy programs.
Alberta has a proud hunting and outdoor heritage. Hunting and hunters have not been given their fair due. This change only affects 12 of the tens of thousands of licences issued in Alberta each year.Hard decisions saved many lives We should not lose sight of the fact, that per capita, Canada suffered less than one half as many COVID deaths as the United States. Thousands of Canadian lives were saved thanks to the restrictions imposed by the federal and provincial governments.
Of course, many people were frustrated and annoyed, especially when their livelihoods were impacted, but for polticians to stir up discontent in an attempt to gain power to me is the height of cynicism and bad faith.Share this article in your social network
