Canada is facing a wave of new homelessness, in the face of inflation and the ongoing effects of the pandemic.

When a newspaper columnist writes a column exposing the snares of a gigantic project; when a non-response is published by two people holding high stakes in said project; when a prominent citizen assembles a team of experts and concludes that cost estimates are grossly underrated; when Calgary’s mayor refuses to meet with unbiased experts; when the present minister of transportation ignores the concerns raised by his predecessor; when a retired transit planner with 36 years of experience...

It is time for the city, provincial and federal auditors to step up to the plate and insist on transparency before further commitments are made that will cripple taxpayers for decades to come.A contributor to the letters pages bemoaned our capitalist greed, as corporations shift jobs to China to improve their bottom line. Of course, there are moral and social consequences to this practice but, as individuals, we all play a role in this outcome.Canadian exports last year topped $28 billion.

My salient recollection of Marc Garneau’s time in parliament has to do with Canada’s disastrously bungled withdrawal from Afghanistan. He was foreign minister at the time and, in interviews, he unfailingly answered questions and criticisms honestly and directly, acknowledged the clumsiness of the effort and its repercussions, and accepted responsibility. Naturally, thereafter he was dropped from cabinet.He will be missed.
