As City of Calgary taxpayers, we are, by default, owners of Enmax. It begs the question, “Why do we own a utility in Maine and take on the financial risk associated with said ownership?” Enmax needs to focus on being the most efficient and effective operator of power assets here in Calgary. The Vegas Golden Knights have a better playoff record in just six seasons than the Calgary Flames have achieved in the 34 seasons since they won the Stanley Cup. It is great to have hockey in Calgary but why are we spending hundreds of millions of taxpayers’ dollars to support a losing franchise while lining the pockets of billionaires?
If the Flames were ever to leave, there would be a lineup of other teams to move here. I support a soccer team in the U.K. that recently spent $1.7 billion of their own money to build a stadium. Why in North America are we conned into subsidizing wealthy owners?
