LARRY COMEAUThe relationship of Canada to the British Monarchy badly needs to be reviewed in light of the toxic and appallingly expensive relationship that exists, with no apparent return to the country. Canada pays a huge price in terms of annual budgets for the position of governor general and the legacy costs associated with previous governors general, who receive an excessively generous lifetime stipend.
This was on top of Mary Simon expensing $100,000 for in-flight catering to a conference in the Middle East. Canadians fared no better in reviewing the history of previous governors general, Julie Payette and Adriene Clarkson. Adrienne Clarkson was censured for her wanton spending ways and Julie Payette was only months into her tenure when she was unceremoniously punted, for her Machiavellian treatment of her staff.
