East Bay Times Letters to the Editor for June 13, 2023
Before Gov. Newsom approves a bailout for BART, state legislators like Scott Wiener and others who are pushing for it, should demand that BART open its books and operate in a more transparent manner.
State legislators, and taxpayers, especially those in the Bay Area who already subsidize BART, have a right to know what “belt-tightening” actions BART has taken over the past several years as ridership has declined. An independent auditor was unable to make much headway into BART’s operations and budget; she subsequently resigned.
Maybe state officials can do better before bailing out the insulated transit system and its Board of Directors who appear to answer to no one.Our elected officials need to act to restore federal recognition for the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe. In partnership with archeologists, the Muwekma tribe recently encountered and studied a Muwekma village, Sii Tuupentak. The Muwekma participated in a study to prove their genetic link to the people who lived for thousands of yearsIn addition to the genealogy and ethnographic history the tribe has done, the tribe has the science to prove that they should be federally recognized.
Native American tribes first survived murderous genocide and then survived various methods of cultural genocide. Denying the Muwekma federal recognition in the face of irrefutable evidence is a method of cultural genocide. Our elected officials are in a position to stop the cultural genocide of the Muwekma tribe, and they should act.So Donald Trump is finally indicted over his handling of secure documents at his home in Florida.
