Now while we’re at it, why not get rid of the half-hour time zone for Newfoundland and parts of Labrador; just think of the confusion that would save. Why did Newfoundland adopt this half-hour time zone? There are a number of jurisdictions with time zones that don’t conform to the 15-degree convention, perhaps the most extreme is the People’s Republic of China. That country spans very near 60 degrees of longitude and has a single time zone, the 15-degree zone that covers Beijing. In the western part of the country, the sun rises after 9 a.m.; remember double daylight savings time.
