SooToday received the following letter to the editor from Karen Renkema Vice President, Ontario, at the Progressive Contractors Association of Canada and Ian DeWaard, Ontario Director, CLAC about construction monopolies in the Sault.
That’s a long time to be shut out of billions of dollars in construction work that their taxes help fund. And it’s the reason that a recent unanimous Divisional Court decision against the Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America is so meaningful.
The provincial government deserves credit for getting the ball rolling with the passage of Bill 66 back in 2019. In fact, just six months after Bill 66 passed, four companies bid on a contract to build a wastewater treatment plant in the Sault. Before this groundbreakin legislation, there would have been only one bidder.
