Russia’s recognition of independence of two breakaway regions is provocative

What is at stake here are Vladimir Putin’s ego and macho image, his dwindling popularity in Russia and his determination to regain some of the territory and influence of the former Soviet Union. This could be the minimum aim he had in mind all the time with this game he is playing. That would improve his position and pave the way for Russian troops to move into regions that are still part of Ukraine.
