An open letter to the Memorial University president and vice-presidents: When I first heard on VOCM that you and your committee decided to remove the ...

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOSWhen I first heard on VOCM that you and your committee decided to remove the singing of the “Ode to Newfoundland” at the convocation, I thought I heard the story wrong. I was both flabbergasted and shocked that the reason your committee omitted it was to promote inclusion, yet from what I understand, your committee made this significant decision without consultation with the Board of Regents and/or the provincial government.

Remember, we were a sovereign nation when MUN was started. Memorial was built to honour people like my grandfather, who was a member of the first 500, the famed Blue Puttees. He was wounded on July 1st, 1916, at the battle of Beaumont Hamel, France, and fortunately, he returned to Newfoundland after the war where he married and raised three daughters and worked for the provincial government for the balance of his working life.

I served two three-year terms on the Board of Regents as an elected member in the late 80s and early 90s, and I am appalled with “the high-handed” decision by the"group of eight”. There are a lot of other things at MUN that need to be fixed before"The Ode." I would be comfortable with appropriate changes to include Labrador after significant consultation with all appropriate stakeholders, beyond"the group of eight." You caught those attending the most recent Convocation “off guard“ with the decision to drop"The Ode." I suspect at the next convocation, they will be “standing on guard” and if it has not been reinstated, there will be a significant protest and I will be there.
