Nurse practitioners provide a range of health services in P.E.I. and work collaboratively with doctors to meet patient needs. ContributedIt is encouraging to read Bertha Hughes’ opinion piece in the Aug. 23 Guardian suggesting nurse practitioner-led clinics can help Islanders have better access to health care.

Are the centralized heath care leadership seeking new, creative and devolved models for frontline management and delivery? As suggested by Ms. Hughes, why is there not more emphasis on using the skill base of nurse practitioners and training and recruitment of more nurse practitioners? Nurse practitioners can assess, diagnose, treat and monitor a broad range of health problems using evidence-based practice.

Is there a clinical model for walk-in clinics that a doctor would contract and oversite numerous nurse practitioners for walk-in clinics? The MD could have two or three nurse practitioners working on a contract basis, providing oversite, with devolved responsibility for hiring, supervision, compensation, paid by the fee-based compensated MD. In this way, more Islanders without a family doctor would have direct access to the health-care system.

Islanders who have improved access to these NP clinics would avoid the harmful outcomes of delayed medical attention, impact on emergency attendance, lack of prevention strategies, and many other detrimental consequences.SaltWire Network welcomes letters on matters of public interest for publication.
