A United States Postal Service letter carrier was robbed and beaten this week in an unincorporated Walnut Creek neighborhood, authorities said.

Around 12:20 p.m. Monday, the letter carrier had gotten out of a vehicle in the 2900 block of Camino Diablo when a person approached her on foot before assaulting and robbing her, a spokesman with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s San Francisco division said Tuesday.

The person took the postal carrier’s keys before leaving the area. The letter carrier was taken to a hospital, where she was treated for injury and later released. Such keys have been consistent targets in similar confrontations, as they allow thieves to steal mail and other items from mailboxes. Neither postal inspectors nor the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office, who were working together on an investigation into the incident, shared any suspect or associated vehicle description.

For information leading to the arrest or conviction of a suspect, the Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward of up to $50,000. Anyone with information may call U.S. Postal Inspection Service dispatchers at 877-876-2455. Information shared will be kept confidential.
