Squash experts say now is the time to plant if you want to get your hands on the possible combined R145,000 prize for the biggest pumpkin in 2020.

The Transvaalse Landbou-Unie’s annual Goliat van Gat Pumpkin Festival takes place on March 7 at the Pretoria Farmers Market. The one to beat is last year’s winner Bubble, a 564kg behemoth grown by Peet Joubert. Organiser Henri Combrink said the festival was started 20 years ago by the Cullinan Farmers’ Union to get people involved in growing their own food – and for people to see how hard farmers have to work to produce crops. ..Simply register at no cost to proceed.
