The ban on the sale of tobacco products was in place for five months from the start of the"hard lockdown" in March 2020 until the country moved to Lockdown Level 2 in August. From the outset, it was heavily criticised by the tobacco industry, which argued it would not lead to much change in smoking habits but would force South Africans to buy expensive unregulated smokes on the black market.
