Gwamanda was elected with the endorsement of the ANC-EFF-led coalition and other minority parties. He was elected to replace his colleague, Thapelo Amad, who resigned following intense pressure from the DA-led multiparty coalition government. Lesufi and Nciza have never missed any council sitting since the chaos of the coalition government started, especially where the DA-led coalition government had been running the municipalities. On Friday, the two Gauteng leaders led the ANC-EFF coalition government of local unity to win back the City of Johannesburg after the resignation of Amad as the mayor. Last week, the ANC and EFF led the fight to dethrone the DA-led multiparty government in Mogale City.
“It’s a conference of resolution that said we needed to reclaim the leadership from the DA and ActionSA coalition, which was not delivering services for our people. Their failure to deliver services to our people was putting the ANC councillors into distress because people are still looking for answers from us.”
