Leonardo DiCaprio hopes Don’t Look Up can help “recreate the narrative” around the climate crisis.

before the COVID-19 pandemic, but many of the storylines and characters feel extremely relevant after the past two years of political polarization, conspiracy theories, and misinformation. And in fact, the movie is really about a different, pressing real world event: climate change. During the Q&A alongside Streep, DiCaprio, and Lawrence after the screening, McKay said he’d been trying to crack a way to put this issue in a film for quite some time.

“I’d written a bunch of different ideas of how to enter the idea of the greatest, most important story in the history of mankind—the climate crisis. I’d written one page treatments that were dramatic, some that were thrillers,” said McKay, who credits his co-writerfor finally cracking it. “He’s a brilliant journalist and shares my frustration for the lack of urgency about this issue and off-handedly said to me about three years ago, ‘It’s like the asteroid is going to hit earth and no one cares.

Likewise, DiCaprio told the audience he had for a long time been looking for a film that would explore the climate crisis in a film. “This movie was like a godsend in a lot of ways. How do you create a sense of urgency and tension with an issue that evolves over a century?” he said.

DiCaprio, known for his climate activism, spoke passionately during the Q&A. In the film, his character’s warnings are falling on deaf ears, especially to those in power. “It just reminded me of all the frustration that I felt from having spoken to numerous climate scientists of, ‘how do I articulate this message of urgency to the general public?’” he said.which Netflix will release in theaters in a limited run on Dec. 10 and on the platform on Dec.
