Municipal and Provincial Affairs Minister Krista Lynn Howell. - SaltWire Network file photoST. JOHN'S, N.L. — New legislation aiming to give Newfoundland and Labrador municipalities more power to deal with issues like bullying and conflict of interest violations takes effect Sept. 1.
The provincial Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs announced the new Municipal Conduct Act will require municipalities to establish their own codes of conduct. The new legislation,will govern conflict of interest, ethical behaviour and professional conduct, the province said. Municipal Affairs Minister Krista Lynn Howell said the new legislation is a step forward for municipal governance in the province.
"The act provides clear guidelines for councils, requiring them to establish their own codes of conduct to effectively address issues such as conflicts of interest, and bullying and harassment in the workplace," noted Howell. Municipal councils are required to establish codes of conduct that apply to all councillors and municipal officials by March 1, 2023.
