Coen coached Lehigh from 2006 until 2018 when he stepped away from coaching after being diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s.

He won five Patriot League titles with the Hawks.

According to Lehigh, Coen was a “fiery and passionate leader who possessed a unique ability to motivate and inspire his student athletes.” The program credited him with mentoring 135 All-Patriot League picks, six Patriot League major award winners, 25 All-Americans, 10 CoSida Academy All District honorees, two CoSida Academic All-Americans and 235 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll picks.

He was named Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2016, and was a three-time finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award, which is given annually to the top coach at the FCS level. He led Lehigh to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2011, and the program finished that season ranked fifth in national polls. The Hawks won the Lambert Cup that season, which is given to the top FCS team in the northeast.

Coen was a native of Cherry Hill, New Jersey and he played offensive line collegiately at Gettysburg College before embarking on a coaching career of more than 30 years. That included stops at Minnesota, James Madison and Penn and two stints at Lehigh.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
