The University of Texas reportedly did not want Roberts to play in the contest, but his teammates refused to play unless he was also allowed to play. The 6-foot-3, 202 pounder was a native of Oceanside, California.

He was taken in the 14th-round, 166th-overall, of the 1958 draft by the New York Giants. But, instead of heading to New York, Roberts spent a year in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts.
