Quebec may have won several court battles launched by Newfoundland and Labrador to undo Hydro-Québec’s 70-year contract to buy electricity generated at Churchill Falls for as little as 0.2 cents per kilowatt-hour, but Quebec Premier François Legault conceded on Friday that it was “a bad deal” for Canada’s easternmost province.
The 0.2 cents price meant the Churchill Falls power was “essentially free,” said Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey at a joint news conference with Legault in St. John’s. The Churchill Falls power plant is 65.8 per cent owned by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and 34.2 per cent by provincially owned Hydro-Québec.
