Last year, West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) gave the green light to plans to move Balloch Library from its existing Carrochan Road base to Balloch Campus, which is already home to Balloch and St Kessog’s Primary, Balloch Early Learning and Childcare Centre (ELCC) and an Additional Support Needs (ASN) unit.
A legal challenge to block the relocation of Balloch Library to the village’s school campus has failed.
Council leader Martin Rooney said it was the only way to prevent the loss of jobs and services as the local authority faced a £17million budget gap, with the move saving the council £50,000 annually. That move has now failed, however, with permission to proceed with the judicial review last week refused because the three month time limit to challenge a decision had lapsed, with campaigners saying they feel “betrayed”.
“The new building is 0.1 mile from the current one; there will be no reduction in staff; there will be a continued ability to access the internet with the same number of devices as presently exist;and while there will be fewer books, staff will be able to order in any titles not in stock; there will be no interface with school pupils.”
